- In a social network like meetup, you do need to use your real name - after all, it's about setting up real live meetings, so using an alias does not help in establishing trust
- If you set up a meeting and don't follow through, you need to inform people and cancel it. While it is appreciated that you now finally responded, you should have canceled it much earlier
- Not sure what you mean by "not working" - you've got 7 confirmed and 5 "Maybe" people, which is not to bad a turnout.
- One reason why it it might not have worked is that you simply did not follow up at all - I asked a question re: the soccer meeting which you never answered. If the organizer doesn't involve him/herself, it simply doesn't happen....

not sure that we're going to hear anything from "John" - he set up a another meeting a week ago and never communicated a location (which, to be fair, might be to the fact that only two people signed up). I would not be able to make it today anyway, but one of the confirmed participants could come up with a meeting place; otherwise, I am willing to organize something at a later point in time.
