About the Races
Spectacle and sport meet Saturday, May 3, 2008 when the Inaugural Charleston Dragon Boat Festival breathes fire on the water at Brittlebank Park. The races pit corporate and community teams against each other for a friendly competition in 39-foot long dragon boat canoes. Cultural activities on land add to the flavor of this ancient Asian ritual.
The charitable component of the race operates much like a 5K run/walk. Team members raise pledges for the Hollings Cancer Center Survivorship Programs. Teams paddle for first prize, but opportunities abound for more prizes and honorable recognition, including: Highest Pledges Raised by an Individual, Highest Pledges Raised by a Team and Most Team Spirit. Each team races in two qualifying heats to determine where they place, then all teams race in a final division based on average times of the first two heats.
