Sam Sumner Reed is Washington's 14th Secretary of State.

As the nation?s most accomplished Secretary of State in the field of elections, Sam Reed is hailed by the people of Washington for protecting their right to vote for the most qualified candidates running for public office. Reed, with the State Attorney General, took the people?s case for a wide open, Top Two Primary to the United States Supreme Court, and won. Voters can now choose any candidate on the primary ballot, regardless of political party.
Secretary Reed is widely recognized for sweeping improvements to the voting process following Washington?s contested 2004 gubernatorial race, the closest in U.S. history.
Honored with a Gonzaga Law Medal for his fair handling of the election and resulting court cases, Reed immediately championed major election reform including a new statewide voter registration system that prevents opportunity for fraud. Under new laws proposed by Reed, the Secretary of State is now authorized to thoroughly review each county's elections procedures and correct problems. Reed successfully advocated for moving the date of Washington's late Primary from September to August ? allowing more time for staff to prepare for an election, and for ballots to reach military and overseas voters.
Since taking office in 2000, Sam Reed has led the State of Washington into the 21st Century and secured its legacy. In 2004, he launched the nation's first state government digital archives to rescue disappearing electronic history.
Reed fought and won the battle to save the Washington State Library, the State's oldest cultural institution. The State Library is now a division of his office.
Currently, Secretary Reed is preparing for the Washington State Heritage Center slated to open in 2012. The Heritage Center, created to celebrate and protect Washington history, will tell stories of our diverse people, vibrant past, and impact on the world through a visitor experience unmatched by anything offered on the Capitol Campus.
Throughout Reed?s two terms in office, the Secretary has worked diligently to make Washington a more business-friendly state by allowing corporations to file electronically. Under his leadership, Washingtonians who give to charity will be better protected from scams. Thanks to Reed?s efforts, new laws are in place to strengthen transparency, accountability, and trust in charitable organizations.
